How To Find Your Serial Number
VW Golf Mk 4 (1997-2003) Gamma
On the older Mk 4 Golfs, the radios require a set of unlocking keys to remove the radio, which is necessary to obtain the serial number for the code. Insert the release keys into the holes and the radio should slide out. A disassembly video is included as an additional aid.
Example serial number: VWZ1Z2G2378456

VW Golf RCD 300 (2003-2007)
The radio of the Mk 5 Golf, the RCD 300, must be removed in order to obtain the serial number for the code. All you need is a screwdriver and a pry tool.
First remove the cover of the central air vents above the radio and expose the two screws. Unscrew the air vents and lever them out to expose the radio screws. Once this is done, you can remove the radio and find your serial number.
Example of the serial number: VWZ1Z2H1273944
VW Golf Mk 6 (2008-2011) RCD 310
To get the code for this type of radio, you need to remove it from the dashboard. It’s a fairly simple process where you use a pry bar to rip out the plastic trim around the radio and expose the 4 screws behind it. Once you have unscrewed the radio, pull it out to find your 14-digit VWZ serial number on the label.
Example serial number: VWZ4Z2L2815322

VW Golf Mk 6 (2008-2011) RNS-310
The Mk 6 navigation radio must be removed in order to obtain the serial number of the radio. Removal is carried out in the same way as for the RCD 310, you need a screwdriver and a pry tool, see above…

- Press button 1 repeatedly to enter the first digit of the code.
- Repeat this procedure for the following digits using buttons 2, 3 or 4.
- To confirm the code, press the “OK” button. If you do not see an “OK” option, try holding down “>>”.

Volkswagen Golf radio code reset procedure
If your Volkswagen Golf’s radio is locked and asking for a code, you’ll need to follow the reset procedure. First, ensure you have the correct code, which can usually be found in the owner’s manual or obtained from the dealership using your VIN and radio serial number. Once you have the code, turn on the ignition, power on the radio, and enter the code using the preset buttons. Once entered correctly, your radio will unlock and be fully functional again. If you enter the wrong code too many times, the radio might lock up further, requiring a longer reset process.
Volkswagen Golf radio code error SAFE mode
If the radio in your Volkswagen Golf displays “SAFE” mode, this is because the incorrect radio code has been entered too often. To reset the radio and try again, switch on the ignition and leave the radio in SAFE mode for about an hour. After this waiting time, the radio should allow the code to be re-entered. Make sure you have entered the correct code to avoid triggering SAFE mode again, which could result in a longer lockout or require a visit to the dealer.
