How do I find my Vauxhall serial number?
If your Opel radio, stereo or navigation system is disconnected from the battery, usually due to a workshop visit or a low battery, it will automatically lock itself and start asking for a code to unlock the radio (sometimes called an authentication key). As this is an anti-theft device, it is not possible to unlock an Opel radio without this code, but finding out your radio code is a simple process that can be done in minutes. Many dealers and online generators will decipher the radio code using the VIN, but this code will not be correct if the radio has ever been replaced during the life of the vehicle.
The most accurate way to determine the code of your Opel car, van or truck radio (also known as the authentication key or security code) is to decode it using the radio’s serial number. There are two ways to find this serial number – a fast one and a slightly slower one.
Fast Track Method:
If your Vauxhall radio or stereo has preset number buttons, you might be able to reveal the serial number directly on the display without removing it. While the radio is prompting for a code, press and hold buttons 1 and 6 for at least 5 seconds, then release. If nothing changes on the display, try holding buttons 2 and 6 instead.
If this method works, the display will show your radio’s serial number, also known as the precode. This will always consist of 1 letter followed by 3 numbers — for example, in the image below, it’s “Q981.”
After obtaining your serial number, enter it into our Vauxhall decoder at the top of this page to instantly generate your radio unlock code. If this method doesn’t display a serial number in the format “A123,” or if your radio/navigation system doesn’t have number buttons, please proceed to Method 2.
Method 2: Removing Your Radio or Navigation Unit
No need to worry—removing your Vauxhall radio is easier than it sounds, and in most cases, you won’t need to disconnect any wires. Simply slide the radio out of the dashboard and take a clear picture of the label on the top or side of the unit. The exact steps vary depending on whether your radio has removal slots. Look closely at the front of your radio for 2 or 4 round holes, which are key indicators for this method.
For Radios/Navigation Units with Removal Slots
If the radio removal slots on your unit are spaced close together like in Image 1, you’ll need single-DIN radio release keys. If the slots are spaced farther apart, double-DIN release keys are required. If you’re in a hurry, you can also try using thin items that fit into the slots, like small screwdrivers or barbecue skewers (you’ll need one for each slot).
Once you have the right tools, insert them into the slots and push until you feel resistance or hear a click. Then, gently pull on the radio while applying outward pressure on the tools to help grip and slide the unit out. Usually, there’s no need to disconnect any wires—just take clear pictures of all labels on the radio and push it back into place.

For Radios/Navigation Units Without Removal Slots
If your Vauxhall navigation system resembles the one shown below, the most challenging part will be removing the outer plastic trim or fascia. This trim is secured by clips located at the back of the radio, indicated by the arrows in Image 1. You can release these clips by firmly pulling away from the radio with your fingers or using a flathead screwdriver. In a pinch, a bread knife can also work.
Once the clips are undone, carefully pry the plastic trim away from the radio to expose the four screws holding the unit in place. Use a Torx 20 screwdriver to remove these screws, and then you can slide the radio out. If your Vauxhall navigation looks different from the one in the image, the removal process will vary based on your specific model.
To find the easiest and most accurate instructions, search for your vehicle’s model and year on YouTube—for example, “how to remove Vauxhall Astra 2007 navigation.” In most cases, you won’t need to disconnect any wires; just take pictures of all the numbers on the radio and snap it back into the dashboard.

Identifying Your Vauxhall Serial Number
Once you’ve partially removed your radio from the dashboard and can see the sticker label on top, take a picture of it and compare it with the examples below to identify your radio’s serial number. If you can’t find a matching serial number on the labels, it may also be engraved directly onto the radio itself (as shown in Images 1 and 2).
Our instant Vauxhall radio decoder currently supports the following serial numbers:
- GMXXXXXXXXXXXX (starts with GM, followed by 12 numbers and/or letters)
- 2811XXXXXXXA123 (starts with 2811)
- 8200XXXXXXXA123 (starts with 8200)
- 77XXXXXXXXXA123 (starts with 77)
- BPXXXXXXXXXXXX (starts with BP,followed by 12 numbers and/or letters)
- 12345 (5 numbers on their own)
- A1234 (1 letter followed by 4 numbers)
- A12345 (1 letter followed by 5 numbers)
If your serial number starts with 2811 , 8200 or 77 you don’t need to enter the full serial number – just the last 4 characters. This will always be 1 letter followed by 3 numbers (e.g. A123 ).
Can I unlock my Vauxhall radio without a radio code?
Unfortunately, you cannot unlock a Vauxhall radio that is requesting a code without entering the correct code. This is by design, as radio unlock codes serve as an anti-theft feature aimed at making it more difficult for thieves to steal and resell car radios.
Can I unlock my Vauxhall radio for free?
Running a 24/7 global radio code business incurs significant costs, so we can’t sustainably offer Vauxhall radio codes for free. Many services advertise “free” codes but reveal hidden fees or fail to deliver, as reflected in their reviews. Our prices are transparent and set as low as possible to support our operations and expand our services.
We were among the first to offer codes for all manufacturers at a fixed price, starting as low as £2.99. Few companies provided such affordability before us. Today, we consistently beat 95% of competitors on price, ensuring you receive your code promptly.
Can I unlock my Vauxhall radio using the registration or VIN?
Unfortunately, it’s not possible to generate a Vauxhall radio code from the registration plate. While most dealerships and some online decoding sites may attempt to use the VIN to decode the radio code, this method is unreliable because the VIN is linked to the car rather than the radio itself. If your radio has been replaced since the vehicle was manufactured, a code derived from the VIN will likely be incorrect.
For this reason, RadioCodePro —like most online decoding sites—decodes the radio code using the radio’s serial number, which provides the best chance of successfully unlocking your radio.
My Vauxhall radio shows SAFE 10 or 10
This indicates that the code is ready to be entered, with 10 attempts remaining. Each time an incorrect code is entered, this number decreases. If you enter an incorrect code, you’ll need to leave the radio and ignition on for a while before trying again—this duration depends on how many incorrect attempts have been made, ranging from a few minutes to up to 11 hours. If you enter an incorrect code 10 times, the radio will become “hard locked” (see below).
How do I enter my Vauxhall radio code?
So you’ve found your serial number, entered it into our radio code generator, and received your decoded radio code—congratulations! Now comes the exciting part: using your new code to unlock your Vauxhall radio.
The process for entering the code varies depending on your vehicle’s radio. Each of our Vauxhall radio codes includes simple instructions at no extra cost. To ensure you receive these instructions, please double-check that your email address is spelled correctly during the payment process. If it’s been more than 2 minutes since your purchase and you haven’t received your email or receipt, please contact us so we can investigate the issue, which is often due to a misspelled email address.
